Degrading Democracy: This Thing is Very Far From Lost

A recording from Grounded Podcast's live video with Dr. Larry Diamond

It’s Martin Luther King Jr. Day, and a good reminder that it’s always the right time to do what’s right—especially at this moment in time.

This year marks 250 years of American independence, but there’s increasing worry about the state of our democracy. Dr. Larry Diamond is a scholar, author, and one of the world’s leading experts on global trends that impact democracy and freedom. He’s said he believes we are entering a high stakes period in American history.

Diamond discusses the global impact of the degrading of democracy in the United States, what he sees as the flaws in our existing government structure, and our “break glass” moment. What can be done?

“We don’t have time for depression,” Diamond says. “We don’t have the luxury of depression. This thing is very far from lost.”

He highlights the need for institutional changes to make our democracy more resilient, including proposed reforms to our electoral process. Plus, how do we get young Americans to place a high value on living in a democracy?

“The problem we are in is not a one-party problem,” Diamond says. “I think the senator knows this too intimately.”

Thank you Stephanie Munoz, Julie, Maura, Renee Allen, Tracy Toner, and many others for tuning into our live video!
