Former ambassador and national security adviser Susan Rice joins Grounded to discuss why America’s current foreign policy strategy amounts to “superpower suicide.”
“We are internationally, Maritsa, in my view, committing what I call superpower suicide,” Rice said. “We’re shrinking from a global superpower to a regional power with primary interests only in the Western Hemisphere, plus Canada and Greenland. We have basically said, China, you can do what you want in your sphere of influence. Russia, you can do what you want vis-a-vis Ukraine and Europe in your sphere of influence. Trump is doing domestically and internationally is in my view returning us to the 19th century 19th century great power competition in spheres of influence.”
On the Russian invasion into Ukraine, Rice says not enough was done to stop Russian President Vladimir Putin in 2014 during the invasion of Crimea. When will it end?
“He doesn’t stop until he is stopped,” Rice said about Putin.
Rice provides a history lesson on what led to this moment and doesn’t hold back on the Trump administration’s strikes on alleged drug boats in the Caribbean.
“It’s called murder. It’s not a war. The laws of war actually shouldn’t apply here,” Rice said. “We can debate the legality of the second strike, but the whole enterprise is illegal. The whole enterprise is extrajudicial killing.”
We also discuss the impact of dismantling USAID and what it all means for our national security. Plus, Sen. Tester weighs in on the $12 billion bailout for farmers.
“This is like the arsonist setting your house on fire and driving up with a fire truck saying, ‘How can I help?’” Tester said.
Don’t miss what Rice said when we asked about a potential run in 2028… or the unexpected interview exchange that landed Maritsa on TMZ and People magazine.
