It’s hard to predict when news will break, but today’s episode is quite timely.
We invited Sen. Mark Kelly (D-AZ) to join us on Grounded after being one of the subjects of a video that prompted the President of the United States to amplify posts calling for six members of Congress to be hanged.
We talked about the video, if he expected this response from the White House, and if he thinks he’s being investigated or surveilled. Then this happened:
Five other members of Congress who served in military or intelligence appeared in the video (including past Grounded guests Sen. Elissa Slotkin and Rep. Jason Crow). In a post to X, Defense Sec. Pete Hegseth said Kelly is the only one of the six who officially retired, and still subject to the Uniform Code of Military Justice (UCMJ).
We asked Sen. Kelly if he thinks he’s being investigated or surveilled, and he said doesn’t have any indication that anybody’s surveilling him.
“I am an open book on this stuff,” Kelly said. “I am not going to be intimidated by this president. I swore an oath to this Constitution.”
Shortly after this news of the investigation broke, Sen. Kelly posted a statement online, which says he only learned he was being investigated because Hegseth’s tweet.
In addition to the video, we discuss the potential Ukraine peace plan being floated by the Trump administration, the economy, and his favorite space movie. Don’t worry—we also asked about his astronaut Labubu.
After we recorded news also broke that a federal judge dismissed charges against James Comey and Letitia James, finding the prosecutor was unlawfully appointed. There’s a lot happening, friends. Thanks for being in this community with us.
